A big, bright cluster in an empty corner of Hydra, visible to the naked eye from a dark site — Messier logged a position four degrees out, so for a century it counted as "missing". The nebula is a foreground interloper, not a member, which makes the pairing no less lovely. One of the oldest open clusters known — four billion years, the Sun's age, when most clusters disperse within a few hundred million. A rich, subdued carpet of two hundred stars west of Acubens; the yellow tint of its evolved suns is real.
